THE 1 Month January RESET

I trudged across my staircase, turned the heating on a bit and looked at the snow fall faster outside the window.
The white blanket got thicker and a shiver ran down my spine. I picked up my hot soy coffee mug and sipped the caffeine filled deliciousness.
Contrary to all my planning and plotting and the tempting masquerade ball invite in Downtown, I was snuggled in my house with family, about to start a Grey’s Anatomy binge with my sisters and I could not be happier.
Except when I was alone like this, staring at the city lights, fuzzy with snow and a smattering of some lone last minute shoppers.
Since, thanksgiving, I had been confined (mostly willingly) to the house, working on my projects and scripts and bulking. But ever since Christmas and that eventful cold day at the Distillery District in Downtown, I was a home buddy.

I knew January was round the corner

and with work gaining steam, I would have to get off my comfort zone and hit the work force again.

And I was a fluffy pile of mess. I had indulged myself in holiday food, cream, cheese and often cupcakes for breakfast and then mac and cheese for three straight days.

I forgive myself and so should you.

But let’s hit January with full force now.

What is the January Reset?

  1. A way to get acquainted with a fit lifestyle without overwhelming your body and mind.
  2. A four week program to kickstart your body, clean the holiday mess and detox you.
  3. Simple diet plans that YOU can modify and not feel unhappy about.
  4. A support group of highly curated people who will ENCOURAGE YOU.

So what are you waiting for???

Benefits of pushups for women

Let’s face it, women have lesser mass on the upper body are and lesser muscle mass as well, the end result? Women tend to have weak upper body strength.

So, how do we make ourselves stronger? Pushups babay!!

Here I list out the benefits of pushups for women:

  1. Pushups enhance the strength of your biceps, triceps and chest. Which means that the flab on your arm is worked and you can actually drop a bra size.
  2. Core Stability: As we age, the core strength reduces which causes flabby stomach to appear and fat tends to be deposited on the belly. As the movement of pushups force you to retract your abdomen, you reduce the are and make it stronger.
  3. Overall toning: Don’t we all want a sculpted look with toned arms and shoulders to look good in a dress? (Yes, I also tend to get superficial). Pushups will help you with that.

SO, without further ado, head over the video HERE and find out the types of pushups you can do!

Girls who Lift: My View

As a girl who is a regular entity at the local gym and the weight lifting section, I feel the lack of women every single day.

Even though it is changing, the people i meet at the free weights section are usually strong, big, buff guys, girls with male partners or bodybuilders. I rarely see girls like me, regular non buff girls at the section. The rare occasion that I do see her, we exchange shy smiles, unknowingly created a bond as the only two anomalies in the system, change in the changing rooms and then disappear in the regular medley of life.

Why is it that girls with muscles are just found in the bodybuilding world or weird fetish world? Even if it is changing, it is so slow that my passion of gym and lifting is not taken as seriously as it should.

I am not applauded for bench pressing 200 pounds or not even praised for my brick abs or broad shoulders.

As a social media influencer, I battle crazy messages on a daily basis, people with weird fetishes asking for my pictures, men sending me unsolicited pictures and random people telling me that I look big or manly.

Do we ever pause and think that lifting might just be good for us?

That some girls like to loft and it is no big anomaly?

I made a video on the 5 reasons girls should lift.

Have a look and tell me what you think.

Cocktail Confessions

My journey is something I always talk about but when I came up with this idea of confessions of other people and their body issues, I did not think I would meet so much resistance.

Back home, in London, and even in the whole of the UK, body acceptance is at an all time high. My idol, Anne Marie shows a regular sized body and everywhere in the media you will see regular sized people. As a filmmaker, I know how the camera adds some pounds. There will be skinny heroin chicks and buxom beauties. They will ALL be there.

As a big fan of Bollywood, I have been disappointed by the past few years where Indian women, known for their curves are going under the knife and dieting to ape the 90’s skinny American girls. The world is moving forward and Bollywood is going backwards.

But, coming to the point. As a body activist, I am not going for skinny shaming of glorifying obesity as I have been accused of. I am looking to help people love and accept their bodies the way it is.

As a fitness coach, I don’t advocate a weight or a size but the rush of endorphins and a happier and healthier lifestyle. I have seen the difference in my own body that it now rejects unhealthy items like cigarettes, alcohol and junk food. I want to run. I want to lift weight, I want to skip and be happy. THAT IS FITNESS.

So, with my cocktail confessions series, I started by talking to a sufferer of PCOS who suffered to facial hair and obesity and mental health issues. In the course of this, I am still in talks with other people but so far, the response in India has been appalling.

I have had a “fit” person ask me how is a fit person body shamed?

I have had another person tell me that you ned to be thick skinned and ignore the comments.

And a skinny person being rude to me saying he does need to eat.

I am fighting against labels. Just like the ones I used above.

Body shaming is a person judging you for your body first and your personality later.

Body shaming is you feeling the need to hide a regular bodily function because people cannot accept that. Period stains anyone?

Body shaming is people taking the liberty to call you fat or complimenting you on losing weight.

Anyone commenting on your body without your consent is body shaming.

I am a FAT GIRL: A Poem

Fatso, giant, big boned, big fat arse

They smiled knowing it was just a farce.

She was not human, was she?

She was just a punchline of a joke.

When I picked a pizza, you saw me and scowled

How dare she eat that, you judged and frowned.

I remember the day i went to the cloth shop

A mother pointed at me, warning her daughter

You don’t want to look like her, she said

They both looked at me, messing with my head.

Fatso, giant, big boned, big fat arse

They smiled knowing it was just a farce.

She was not human, was she?

She was just a punchline of a joke.

I pulled and pulled the biggest jeans over my fat thighs

Wishing I could cut off the flesh with the sharpest knife.

You came to me and said I was fat

You were a friend but what right you had?

You said he will love you for your personality.

Insinuating I wasn’t good enough for him.

I see you today and I want to ask you again.

Did you see me that day, did you feel my pain?

You said my sister was prettier than I

You said I was ugly forcing me to hide my sigh.

I walked on the street and you screamed at me

Oi fatty! You shouted in jest and ran off before I could see.

Fatso, giant, big boned, big fat arse

They smiled knowing it was just a farce.

She was not human, was she?

She was just a punchline of a joke.

You said I was bigger than my mum

Reducing me to just a size of my bum.

You asked me out on a date

It was a dare to make the fat girl wait.

At parties you wanted to laugh at me.

Watching me eat or dressing me up, wasn’t it fun to see?

I went to the gym and dropped the pounds.

You came running after me like hounds.

Suddenly what I said mattered to you.

My face, my brains, my heart were yours to woo.

Do I leave the fat girl behind?

Does she not deserve a chance and a love to find?

Was she not human enough or just a wad of fat.

For you to mock and shame and wander in your tall hat.

The fat girl in me is still within hearing range.

You may not see her, but I see your behaviour change.

I may be half of her but she is whole of me.

She remembers and so do we.

13 Reasons Why : Why we should watch this show

A TV show that has been in the news for both negative and positive reasons, 13 Reasons Why is a must watch.

The show has been criticised for its almost artistic portrayal of suicide and mental illness and is peppered with warnings showing graphic images of sexual assault and the actual act of suicide.

But the message in the show is so very important that we need to really focus on that. It reaches into the dark corners of your heart and mind, into memories suppressed and forcefully forgotten. With time, many memories are whitewashed into nostalgia for high school and TV and films make high school seem almost romantic. 13 Reasons Why shatters that illusion and forces you to actually introspect about your own school life. What were you when you were a teen? What did you say or do? How did you react and interact with others?

Netflix's_13_Reasons_Why_title_screenOn the surface the show is about how bullying can affect people and how small acts magnify into major reactions. But what I get away from it is the fact that every word you say and every action of yours affects someone in someway.

We are guilty of it. All of us.

I remember once befriending a new girl in high school and during recess ignoring her and chatting with my mates. I shifted from my seat and saw her crying through the window, out in the park. I did not talk to her ever but that image of her, quietly sobbing still haunts me.

And I have been on the other end of the spectrum, hearing someone talk bad about me.

The show is a creative genius, showing both sides of different cliques and people and forces us to stop being judgemental. It is important because we need to learn not be judgemental. Many friendships are broken because we cannot stop and empathise, relationships deteriorate because we are quick to make a judgement and immediately believe anything that is negative.

The show may have garnered rave reviews and criticisms alike but should also been looked at through the mirror of human introspection and make us better human beings, kinder and gentler.

High Calorie Fruits

There are some amazing and delicious fruits that would have any serious bodybuilder or dieter in fits with their high level of natural sugar, fat and calories. These fruits would classify as deserts and taste as good but are absent from so many diets because people are scared of them.

Point to be noted is they are high in “naturally occurring” sugars, naturally occurring being the keyword. This quality makes them some of the best sources of carbohydrates and sugars in our diets and we would do so much better for having added them in our meals.

Here are some of them and the many benefits they present:

Mango: This tropical delicacy has found its way into many deserts and hearts. Dubbed Mango on a white backgroundthe king of fruits for its gooey deliciousness, mango gets a bad rep from being too high in sugars and energy and is often linked to heatstrokes and acne outbreaks. Well, excess of anything is bad but mango is so much more than its bad reputation. Mangoes are high in natural carbohydrates which can increase your glucose levels. But this glucose is more readily converted to energy as compared to the glucose you get from bread. Mangoes contain polyphenols which reduce your natural glucose level, destroy the ability of fat cells to multiply and reduce the insulin level. Mangoes have also been known to fight cholesterol level. But then again, it should be in moderation and one of the best times to consume mangoes is in the morning as it means you get energy to burn off the glucose your acquire.

Banana: Bananas are another delicious and filling variety of fruits getting a bad rep for downloadits high carbohydrate content. One of the most important things to remember here is that while carbohydrate content is an important factor, it is very important to check the glycemic index of foods as high GI food cause a spike in sugar and insulin in the body that is not good for health. All foods with a GI of less than 55 are safe to consume, with banana scoring at 52. Bananas contain naturally occurring potassium and magnesium which are very important for heart health and keep your heart in a good shape. A factor to consider would be that as bananas ripen, the carbohydrate content in them increases to up to 23 percent of their actual weight. So, green bananas would have less carbohydrates than yellow bananas.

Coconut: Coconut is the miracle tropical fruit finding its way in many diets. But people download (1)are still vary of coconut because of its fat content and the fact that coconut oil is high in saturated fats. To debunk this, lets classify coconut into two major varieties. The green coconuts with a green shell and soft flesh and coconut water in plenty is the younger version of the more mature and familiar brown husky coconut with a head flesh. The water derived from green coconut is almost completely fat free and full of antioxidants and electrolytes that help maintain hydration in muscles. The fat in coconut oil is medium chain fatty acid and is more readily absorbed by the body as opposed to long chain fatty acids like in grease or lard. This medium chain fatty acid fights fat cells and aids weight loss. Another important use of coconut is the fact that it has vitamin E and the ability to repair tissue damage. It gives the skin a fresh look and maintains a balance inside the tissues. Choose virgin coconut oil as opposed to any other variety and see the health benefits yourself.

Mudapples: Mudapples are tropical fruits that are brown in colour with a heart shaped sapota-small-nati-town-1-kg-04seed. Also known as Chiku in India, they get a bad rep for their sugar content and high amount of carbohydrates, almost 20 gas per serving. But Mudapples are high in fibre and act as natural laxatives that help aid weight loss. They also prevent loss of blood in injuries and are natural sedatives. They help remove toxins from the body and counter any kind of kidney or bladder stones. Mudapples can be consumed in limited quantity and not completely shunned.

Custard Apple: They are called custard apple because they taste like custard!! A dessert Brazilian Fruitin a fruit is the best kind but they contain high amount of natural sugars and carbohydrates which can be an issue if consumed in high quantity. But again, a naturally occurring sugar is more readily digested and our body needs carbohydrates to function despite all the media campaign against carbs. Custard apples contain potassium and magnesium which are very good for heart health and also maintains a proper blood flow in the arteries.
